Kangaroos Season 2 Training – FAQ

Kangaroos Season 2 Training Model – Frequently Asked Questions

Introduction

For Season 2, Kuringgai Kangaroos will be introducing a new training model designed to improve the development experience for all players while keeping costs affordable for families and making better use of the court space available to the club.

Our focus is on building a club-wide player development framework that supports every Kangaroos player, rather than simply training individual teams in isolation. The program is being developed in alignment with the Spiders player development pathway to provide consistent, high-quality coaching and skill development across the club.

Below are answers to some of the common questions parents may have about the new approach.

Why is the club changing its training model?

Our goal is to:

  • Improve the quality of coaching and player development available to all players.
  • Increase the focus on individual skill development while continuing to teach team concepts.
  • Keep costs manageable for families.
  • Make better use of the courts hired by the club.
  • Create a consistent development framework across all Kangaroos teams and age groups.

How will training work?

The preferred model is for approximately three teams to train together on one court under the guidance of a qualified Spiders coach.

Players will work in skill-based activities and development stations that allow coaches to focus on individual improvement while still incorporating team concepts and game-related learning.

Will teams still be able to train together?

Yes.

We would prefer teams to nominate for the same training session so that teammates can continue to train alongside each other. To make this easier, training session selection will occur after registrations have been completed, allowing friends and teams to coordinate their preferred session.

Will there be an additional coaching fee?

No.

The new coaching model comes at no additional cost to families. By combining three teams onto one court, the club can provide qualified coaching while keeping training costs at current levels.

Who will be providing the coaching?

The coaching will be delivered by Spiders coaches.

The program is being developed in consultation with Shac Shorer, Spiders NBL1 Head Coach and Head of Development, to ensure players receive high-quality instruction that aligns with proven player development principles.

The emphasis will be on improving individual skills, basketball IQ, decision-making, and long-term player growth, while continuing to teach team concepts.

What happens to our volunteer coaches?

Volunteer coaches remain an extremely important part of the Kangaroos community.

We want our volunteer coaches to stay involved and actively participate in training sessions. Their knowledge of their players, relationships with families, and contribution to team culture remain highly valued.

This program is intended to support volunteer coaches, not replace them.

Can our team continue to use its own coach?

Absolutely.

Teams that wish to continue training with their own coach may choose to do so. In that case, your team will be allocated half a court, similar to the arrangements used in previous seasons.

Can our team still pay for a private coach?

Yes.

Teams may continue to engage and pay for their own coach if they wish. This decision should ideally be supported by all families within the team.

Some teams may also choose a hybrid approach, participating in the club's development training while engaging a coach for games only. This can provide coaching support while reducing costs for families.

Will training times stay the same?

Not necessarily.

The court allocation process will start again for Season 2, which means there will be changes to some training times and court allocations.

We will do our best to accommodate preferences where possible while ensuring courts are used effectively across the club.

Is this about developing teams or developing players?

Both, but with a stronger emphasis on player development.

The objective is to build a club-wide development framework that helps every Kangaroos player improve their skills and reach their potential. Rather than focusing solely on the needs of one team at a time, we are creating a structured pathway that supports player growth across all age groups and levels.

We believe this approach will deliver better long-term outcomes for players while strengthening the overall quality of basketball throughout the club.
