Kangaroos Training Program

Developing Players, Building Confidence, Growing Community

At Kuringgai Kangaroos Basketball Club, our goal is to provide every player with a positive, inclusive and enjoyable basketball experience. We want children to develop their skills, build confidence, make friendships and foster a lifelong love of the game.

As our club continues to grow, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience for players, families and volunteers. From Season 2, 2026, we are introducing a new training model for our younger age groups that will provide more consistent skill development, greater flexibility for families and enhanced coaching support.

A New Training Model

For players in Under 8s through to Under 14s, training will be delivered through age-group based skills sessions rather than individual team training.

Multiple training sessions will be available for most age groups across Saturday and Sunday afternoons, allowing families to select a session that best suits their schedule.

These sessions will focus on developing fundamental basketball skills, game understanding and confidence in a fun, engaging and supportive environment.

Players in Under 16s and older age groups will continue with team-based training as they do currently.

Professional Coaching Support

A key feature of the new program is our partnership with Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Basketball Association, which will provide qualified paid coaches to deliver training sessions.

This approach offers players access to experienced coaches while reducing the burden on parent volunteers who have traditionally organised and run weekly training sessions.

Our volunteer coaches remain an important part of the Kangaroos community and will continue to coach teams on game days. Coaches are also encouraged to attend training sessions and remain actively involved in supporting player development.

Benefits for Players and Families

The new training model provides a range of benefits, including:

  • More consistent and structured skill development
  • Access to qualified basketball coaches
  • Greater flexibility in training times
  • Opportunities to train alongside players from other Kangaroos teams
  • Larger, more energetic training environments
  • Reduced reliance on volunteer-led training
  • Improved sustainability for the club

Training in larger age-group groups also helps ensure sessions can continue effectively even when some players are unavailable due to holidays, illness or other commitments.

Keeping Basketball Affordable

While this program represents an increased investment in player development, the club has worked hard to minimise any additional costs to families.

By making more efficient use of court hire and training resources, Kangaroos is able to deliver enhanced coaching while maintaining our commitment to keeping basketball accessible and affordable for all families.

Continuous Improvement

This program will initially apply to players from Under 8s through to Under 14s. Throughout the season, we will seek feedback from players, families and coaches as we continue to evaluate and refine the program.

We are excited about the opportunities this new approach will create and look forward to supporting the ongoing development of every Kangaroos player.
